Ponds, basins, fountains and water features were a major element within a French formal style garden and they were utilised to make reflections, thus giving the illusion that the chateau and the garden was even larger than it really was by acting like mirrors.

So hence, when the Jardin des Tuileries was redesigned by the landscape architect Andre Le Notre, who had already designed the gardens for the Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte and the largest gardens in Europe at the time, which were those of the Chateau de Versailles, he put in place three round basins, close to the Palais des Tuileries, with this being the Vivier sud pond.
