HD photograph of Jardin du Luxembourg central garden area - Page 98
The main idea back in the 17th and 18th centuries was to always have the castle or palace as the main focus of the garden, so there were never any trees planted right near to the mansion house, and the central area directly in front was laid out in parterres with grass, gravel and flowerbeds as you can see here at the Luxembourg Gardens.
And this photo was taken while we were standing on the alley or pathway in front of the Palais du Luxembourg looking south towards the Observatoire de Paris, which is far in the distance, yet the garden does extend on either side of this formal French style area.
