Diane Avec Chiens Sculpture Pavillon Richelieu Musee Du Louvre

This first HD photo shows a relief sculpture called Diane avec Chiens, which translates in English to Diana with Dogs, however, it is also known as Diane entre deux chiens, and this translates as Diana between two dogs.

You will find that Diana is actually known as Goddess of the Hunt in Roman mythology, and through the ages she has been depicted in paintings, statues and sculptures as being with deer or hunting dogs.

Diane Avec Chiens Sculpture By Pierre Louis Rouillard

Now this particular statue style sculpture was produced by Pierre Louis Rouillard who was born in Paris in 1820 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts to become a French sculptor, who is most well known for his animal compositions.

Pierre Louis Rouillard worked for many different tourist attractions in Paris including the Tour Saint Jacques, Fontaine Saint Michel and the Palais Garnier Opera House, plus he was commissioned by Sultan Abdulaziz to travel to Istanbul where he executed numerous sculptures and statues in different parts of the country.

Yet Pierre Louis Rouillard was also appointed head of The Palais du Louvre restoration project between 1850 and 1857, so there are many different decorative elements that are attributed to this artist including the Diane avec Chiens.

And here you can see the relief of Diane entre deux chiens positioned above a window on the first floor of the Pavillon Richelieu, and when you are looking at this facade from the courtyard of The Louvre called the Cour Napoleon, this is the right hand side sculpture, however, there is an identical one on the left hand side.
