This statue bust of Prud'hon was commissioned by the administration des Beaux-Arts back in 1886 to the artist and French sculptor Gustave Joseph Debrie, who is actually a very little known artist, but was born in 1842 and passed away in 1932.
So, made of marble, this was sculpted to depict one of the few French artists chosen to be represented on the facade of the Orangerie, and put in place in 1888, the bust can be viewed from the Rosery and pathway next to it within the Luxembourg Gardens, and this is located in the north westerly part of the garden.
And as you can see from this close up HD photo, the bust depicts Pierre Paul Prud'Hon, sometimes spelt Prudhon or Prud Hon, and he was born on 4th April 1758 in the Burgundy region of France.
Pierre Paul Prud'Hon started training to become an artist in different areas of France, and then travelled to Italy to further his studies, and upon his return, when he ended up in Paris, he started executing decorations for private mansions.
Now this then led to even further commissions for paintings, etc and he became popular with Napoleon and was held in high esteem at the Imperial court, especially after completing a portrait of his first wife Josephine, which is now held within the Musee du Louvre, but he was even employed by the second wife of Napoleon, Marie-Louise, and Prud'Hon continued painting almost until he passed away in the February of 1823.
