Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix Statue By Alfred Lepere

After the new building for the Musee du Luxembourg and the Orangery were finished, it was decided that the facade of the Orangerie would be adorned with busts depicting different artists, so the marble bust you can see in this HD photo was commissioned by the Administration of Fine Arts in 1886.

The commission was given to Alfred Adolphe Edouard Lepere, who was born in Paris on 15th May 1827 and he became a French sculptor and painter who was awarded the Legion of Honour, and this bust of Delacroix was set in place on the facade in 1888.

Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix Bust Jardin Du Luxembourg

Now as you have already read, this marble bust is dedicated to Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix, who was born on 26th April 1798, and became a famous painter, regarded as the leader of the French Romantic school.

Incredibly, over 9,000 works of art have been attributed to Eugene Delacroix, who had a very successful career, but as well as numerous paintings and drawings, he also worked on frescos and paintings for different historical buildings in Paris including famous tourist attractions such as The Louvre where he painted a ceiling for the Apollon wing, the frescos in the library of the Palais du Luxembourg and many more.

And in fact, you can also discover a beautiful monumental fountain in the Luxembourg Gardens, located close to the Orangery, which is also dedicated to Eugene Delacroix, who passed away at his home in August 1863 and is buried in Pere Lechaise cemetary.
