Psyche Sous l Emprise Du Mystere Statue

This first image shows the marble statue Psyche sous l'emprise du mystere, which translates in English to Psyche under the influence of the mystery, and this work is based upon the story of a Latin novel about Cupid and Psyche overcoming obstacles and from Greek art dating back centuries always relating to love, mystery, myths, etc.

Luxembourg Grdns Psyche Sous l Emprise Du Mystere

You will find that Psyche sous l'emprise du mystere was sculpted by Mme Leon Bertaux, who was originally born Josephine Charlotte Helene Pilate in July 1825 and studied with her father who was a sculptor, becoming a French sculptor herself, and after she separated from her first husband in 1854, she started signing works Madame Leon Bertaux, which was the name of her companion that she married after her husband died in 1865.

Yet at that time women were not often recognised as artists, but Leon Bertaux started exhibiting at Paris Salons and in 1873 opened a sculpture school specifically for women, and still continuing to exhibit her works, this marble statue was exhibited at the 1889 Exposition Universelle for which she won a gold medal, and it was eventually placed within the Luxembourg Gardens in 1923.
