Today Place de la Bastille is a chic and popular place with numerous clubs, theatres, bars and restaurants to enjoy, which have become very popular both with tourists visiting the city and Parisians, but Bastille Square is also famous for the fortress that once stood here and the Storming of the Bastille, which marked the start of the French Revolution.

This part of the Bastille square you can see in this image in front of the Opera Bastille, is a popular meeting place for locals and is often utilised by people rollerblading, skateboarding, for musicians and demonstrations, plus it is right by the Canal Saint-Martin, which is another popular tourist attraction in Paris.

We took this photo showing the view across the Place de la Bastille, which is a very busy square in Paris that has a rich history and was named after the Bastille fortress and prison, which was subsequently destroyed after the French Revolution.

This is a photo we took of the Colonne de Juillet, which translates to July Column in English, and this is located in the centre of the Bastille Square, and was constructed during the reign of King Louis Philippe after the destruction of the former Bastille fortress.

After the French Revolution and another Revolt, which is often referred to as the Three Glorious Days, King Louis Philippe decided to have a monument constructed where the Bastille prison once stood, and this is a photo showing the plaque of the 1830 Revolution on the July Column at the Place de la Bastille.

Located in the centre of the Place de la Bastille square you will see the tall monument in Paris known as the Colonne de Juillet, which is actually 47 metres in height, and as you can see in this image, there is a gilded statue on top, which was named the Genie de la Liberte.

The Canal Saint-Martin goes from the River Seine to the Canal de l'Ourcq, yet parts of it are hidden by tunnels, and this is a photo we took showing the section going into a tunnel underneath the Place de la Bastille, and in the image you can also see the Colonne de Juillet along with the Opera Bastille both located on the square.

There are numerous different buses that stop opposite the Opera Bastille, which is the modern opera house in Paris you can see in this image, which is located on the Place de la Bastille square, and to give you a perspective, the July Column would be to your left.

This is a photo we took of the above ground section train tracks which are a part of the Metro station at the Place de la Bastille, and incredibly, the Canal Saint-Martin actually goes under these and the square itself.

The Velib is a self service bike rental scheme in Paris with numerous stations dotted all over Paris, and this is a photograph showing just some of the bikes, the locking docks and automated pay station located on the Place de la Bastille Square.

This is a photograph we took of a rickshaw while we were at the Place de la Bastille, and you will see many different forms of these that provide tours and transport in Paris for the thousands of tourists every year that want to see the city differently.

This is a picture we took showing the Cafe Francais which is a large brasserie and restaurant serving gourmet French cuisine in an idyllic spot looking out towards the Place de la Bastille Square and its monument in the centre.

To get this picture of Opera Bastille we had to wait some time for all the traffic to stop

Here you can see the Opera Bastille opera house with its modern design that was constructed in the 1980s and is one of the largest in the world, located on the Place de la Bastille, and although in complete contrast to its surroundings, due to all the glass used it provides some fabulous views of this area of Paris.

A toilet or public convenience may seem like a strange thing to take a picture of, but while you are on holiday and sightseeing in Paris, these automatic constructions that clean themselves after each person are dotted all over the city, and this was one we came across at the Place de la Bastille.

While taking a moments rest in the shade of the trees, we took this photo of the Place de la Bastille intersection that is home to the July Column monument, part of which, you can see here in the centre of a rather large roundabout.

While we were standing in the Place de la Bastille close to the bus stop, we took this photograph showing two of the buses coming around, and if you look closely at the top left corner you will see the different numbers for what routes they will be taking.

We were standing at the southern end when we took this photo of the Place de la Bastille and the people crossing the Boulevard Bourdonone intersection, but in times gone by this area had a fortress that was turned into a prison until the event known as The Storming of the Bastille.

This is a view of the Place de la Bastille square that we took while standing on the southern side looking over towards the brasserie and restaurant called Les Grandes Marches, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, right next to the entrance for the Opera Bastille.
